THE LEAD – The Lesley University baseball team split its North Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Thomas College (20-13, 5-10) on Saturday afternoon at H. Allen Ryan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- Lesley struck first in game one Saturday thanks to a three-run top of the first which included RBIs from Owen Kalagher (Fairfield, Conn.) and Kevin Dorsey (Cibolo, Texas). However, Thomas answered back in the bottom half of the frame getting one run back which made it 3-1 and that would be the theme throughout the second and fourth innings.
- After back and forth innings between the two squads, Lelsey held a 9-6 advantage going into the fifth. Despite the three-run lead, Thomas would score once again in the following inning and earn its first lead of the afternoon (10-9) thanks to a four-run fifth. Cam Hayes highlighted the inning with a two-run RBI single to center that tied the game and in the next at-bat, DJ Cagnia gave the hosts the lead thanks to a RBI single.
- While Thomas had its largest scoring inning of the game, Lesley answered right back with its largest scoring inning when the Lynx plated seven runs in the top of the sixth to go back ahead 16-10. Caden Shott (Richmond, Calif.) evened things at 10 after he drew a walk. Later in the inning, both Colby Jacobs (Charlton, Mass.) and Colin McCarthy (Rehoboth, Mass.) each had two-run RBI singles in the frame to highlight the Lynx's offensive output.
- The Lynx would go on to tack on another run thanks to heads up base running by Kalagher who scored on a passed ball to make it 17-10 in the seventh but Thomas trimmed the deficit to four (17-13) behind a three-run seventh. However, that would be the closest the hosts would get as Lesley piled on three more runs in the ninth to go up 20-13 with RBIs from Dorsey, Shott, and Raymond Morales (Naugatuck, Conn.). In the bottom of the ninth, Jacob Nemergut (Monore, Conn.) would retire the side in order and ultimately secure the 20-13 victory in game one.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)
- Jacobs tied his season-high in RBIs with four which also included his second home run of the season.
- Four other Lynx finished with multiple RBIs on the day including Dorsey and Morales who each had three, and McCarthy and Shott who had two apiece.
- Eight of nine Lynx hitters recorded at least one hit in game one including three from both Jacobs and Morales.
- Lesley starter Charles Ambroult (Quincy, Mass.) got the win by going 3.2 IP while allowing six hits and striking out three.
- For Thomas, Cagnina and Haynes led the Terriers offense with three RBIs each.
- Thomas' starter Garrison Paillet took the loss after going 1.0 IP and giving up three runs (one earned).
- For the second time this year, Lesley has scored at least 20 runs in a game (24 vs. FDU Florham-Mar. 11).
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
- Thomas wasted no time in game two as the Terriers raced out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Haynes highlighted Thomas' scoring during the stretch with a two-run homer. Lesley would get one run back in the top of the third after a McCarthy sacrifice fly made it 5-1.
- However, Thomas would answer the Lynx in the bottom half of the frame with two more runs to go up 7-1. Despite the large lead, Lesley once again pulled with in four (7-3) after Christian McElroy (Toms River, N.J.) ripped a two-run RBI single up the middle. Despite coming within four, Thomas again would keep the squad at a distance in the bottom of the fourth when Elijah Morton sent an RBI triple down the left field line that brought in three which gave Thomas a 10-3 advantage.
- Lesley would cut the deficit in half (10-5) thanks to RBIs from Morales and McElroy but unfortunately, that would be the closest the Lynx would get as Thomas would hang on for the 10-5 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)
- McElroy tied his season-high in RBIs with three in game two.
- On the mound, Lesley starter Roy Lenhard (Shelton, Conn.) was handed with the loss after going 2.1 IP allowing nine hits, seven runs (six earned), and striking out three.
- For Thomas, Haynes and Morton led the way offensively with four RBIs each.
- Terriers starter Jarrad Willette earned the win after going 5.1 IP and gave up four hits, five runs (three earned), and struck out five.
- Despite the win, Lesley currenly holds the all-time series lead over Thomas at 4-2 and have won two out of the last three matchups.
