THE LEAD – Despite being down by as much as 8-0 and tying the game at 10, the Lesley University baseball team fell short in completing its comeback falling to WIT, 14-10 Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After both sides went scoreless in the first, WIT's bats exploded in the second as the visitors plated six-runs in the inning which featured a two-run RBI single from Nick Cullinan that made it 6-0. The Leopards offense would continue to add on more runs in the third with two more runs with RBIs from Josh Turcotte and Matt Robinson.
- Despite the large deficit, Lesley would not go quietly as the squad cut WIT's lead in half thanks to a four-run bottom of the fourth. James Brandon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) got the scoring started thanks to a two-run RBI to left center that made it 8-2. Later in the inning, Brandon took advantage of a WIT error at third and would make it an 8-3 game. Two batters later, Caden Shott (Richmond, Calif.) would draw a walk resulting in the squad's fourth run.
- WIT tacked on another run in the sixth to go back up five (9-4) but later in the seventh, Lesley would score two more runs and make it a three-run game (9-6) courtesy of RBIs from Owen Kalagher (Fairfield, Conn.) and Kevin Dorsey (Cibolo, Texas).
- After the Leopards got one run back in the eighth to make it 10-6, the Lynx would have their second four-run inning and end up tying things at 10. With Colin McCarthy (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Brandon both scoring thanks to a WIT error, Lesley would find themselves down one (10-9). Later in the inning, Shott would drive in the tying run thanks to a sacrifice fly to deep center which resulted in Justin Dennett (Fairfield, Conn.) scoring.
- Later in the ninth however, WIT retook the lead courtesey of a four-run frame which included a two-run RBI triple off the bat of Christian Roncal that made it 13-10 at the time. Unfortunately in the bottom of the ninth, the Leopards would retire the Lynx one-two-three for the 14-10 win.
