THE LEAD - The Lynx and Beavers split yesterday's matchup, and Lesley looked to improve today heading into another doubleheader. The first game started with a Beavers rally, but the Lynx stayed determined and tied it up, but ultimately fell 9-7. Then in the rematch, the Beavers got off to an even bigger early lead. The Lynx never wavered, scoring nearly every inning. UMF's offense was too much, however, as they swept the day with a 17-11 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)

  • The Beavers started the game by loading the bases, but the Lynx were able to get out of it.

  • They weren't so lucky in the 2nd. The leadoff man was plunked, then a single and a walk loaded the bases. A sac fly drove in the first run of the game, and the next man walked to load them up again.

  • A Beaver was hit by a pitch and scored a run, then a fielder's choice where everyone was safe put UMF up 3-0.

  • UMaine looked as if they were going to have another big inning, but a double play ended it.

  • Nathan Young started the bottom of the 3rd, reaching on an error. Caden Shott then hit a single and a walk from Grant Bazinet, loading the bases. Gerlys Martinez drew a walk too to put the Lynx on the board.

  • The Lynx kept it going in the 4th. Young singled, and Andres Moreno did the same. Logan Shudy also hit a single, and an error brought him to second and Young home.

  • The Beavers responded by getting three singles in a row to score a run. A walk then loaded the bases, and a double scored two. One more single put the Beavers up 8-3.

  • In the bottom of the 5th, Martinez was hit, Owen Finnegan walked, and Payne Johnson was hit too. An error on the pitcher allowed Martinez to score, and a double from Young scored the other two.

  • A UMF batter hit one up the middle for a single, then the next did the same. The batter on second stole third and scored on an error.

  • With their backs against the wall in the 7th, Finnegan was hit, and a grounder from Anthony Nyhuis moved him up. He took third on a wild pitch, and a sac fly from Johnson scored him.

  • The Lynx ultimately fell 9-7.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1)

  • Young had the best day at the plate. He went 2 for 4 with a double. He drove in two and scored two runs. He accounted for over half the Lynx's runs. On the field, he was responsible for a double play.

  • Benjamin Coffey stepped up for the Lynx on the mound. In these 1.1 innings, he gave up a single walk and struck out a batter.

  • Ike Wrigley led the Beavers in the first game. He went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He drove in two runs and crossed home once. He also stole two bases.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)

  • The Lynx were the first on the board this time. Shudy started the game reaching on an error. A bunt from Shott moved him up, and a single from Bazinet brought him home.

  • Martinez kept it alive with a single of his own. Nyhuis walked to load the bases, and a single from Young scored two.

  • The Beavers responded by homing in on the first pitch of the second.

  • A couple of batters later, it is hit. He then steals second, and a single drives him home.

  • In the 3rd, a Beaver draws a walk, and the next does the same. A groundout moves them up, and an error scores one.

  • Another walk loaded the bases, and one more scored a run. A single drive in two. Another single loads them up again. One more single brings in another.

  • A double then scores two more. The next batter is walked to load them up, and the batter to follow walks and gets an RBI. 10-3 Beavers

  • The Lynx are not discouraged. Finnegan and Nyhuis are both single, and Young is too, to score a run. Moreno also singles to get an RBI, too.

  • Lesley continues their pursuit in the 4th. Bazinet draws a four-pitch leadoff walk then takes second on a balk. A double from Martinez helps them chip away at the deficit.

  • In the 5th, Shudy hit a single and stole second. A single from Shott makes it 10-7.

  • The Beavers didn't like the Lynx making it close. They started the 6th by reaching on an error, and the next man up got hit. A single loaded the bases, and another drove in a run. A walk scores another. A fielder's choice where everyone's safe drives in another two.

  • A base-clearing single made it 16-7, but they weren't done yet. Two more singles give them another run.

  • Down 10 and facing the run rule, the Lynx must score in the 6th to stay alive. Finnegan smacked a single, and Nyhuis followed. Young took a four-pitch walk, and Brown hit a sacrifice fly to keep the game going. Shudy then hit a single and drove in two more.

  • In the 7th, down eight, with two outs, Christopher Wallace singled. Finnegan and Nyhuis followed with walks. Young then doubled and scored two, but it was all the Lynx could muster.

  • UMF won 17-11

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 2)

  • Finnegan did all he could on offense. He went 2 for 4 with a walk and accounted for three runs.

  • The Lynx's best pitching performance came from Coffey. He saw three batters from the Beavers unstoppable offense and sat them all with only four pitches.

  • The entire UMF lineup was hot, but Jackson Murray really shone. He went 5 for 5 with four RBI's and accounted for two runs. He also stole a base and was responsible for a double play.
