Men's Hoops Falls Short Due to MMA's Elite Defensive Performance

THE BASICS

Lesley University, 48 vs. Maine Maritime Academy, 90

Records:
Lesley University Lynx (3-17, 3-11 NAC)
Maine Maritime Academy Mariners (9-13, 9-6 NAC)

Location: Castine, Maine - Smith Gym

Date: Saturday, January 31, 2025

THE LEAD —  The Lynx looked to shake off their previous day's loss as they continued on their Maine road trip. The Mariners looked to spin their last game's win over Thomas into the start of a new winning streak. MMA came out hot on both sides of the ball. Lesley's defense kicked in in the second half, but by then it was too late. The Mariners got the 90-48 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Mariners got off to a quick start, putting up seven in the first minute and not allowing the Lynx any.

  • MMA's defense was unstoppable. Before the halfway mark of the opening quarter, they were up 21-8.

  • Combined with their inability to miss a three-pointer, the Mariners were up 34-12 with 10 minutes left in the first.

  • The Lynx were answerless for the first half, going into the locker room down 58-23.

  • Lesley's defense was in full effect in the second, holding MMA to nearly half of their first-quarter points.

  • Slowly, the Lynx tried to crawl their way back into the game, but the Mariners' defense was too much to handle. The final score was 90-48.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  •  CJ Leonard led the Lynx Offense with 14 points. He grabbed four rebounds and recorded a steal.

  • Aaron Feaster led the team with five rebounds and dished out an assist. He also scored the team's sole three-pointer, part of his six points on the night.

  • Despite the offensive struggles, the Lynx were able to record their second-most steals in a game this season with 11. Nine players recorded a steal, including Sammy Nzeyimana and Sean Chanakira, who each had two.

  • For the Mariners, Drew Hamilton had the best offensive production, scoring 22 points, hitting three steals, grabbing three rebounds, and dishing out two assists.

  • Aaron Pensel put up a double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 points. He also led the team with two blocks and grabbed a steal.

  • 48 points is the lowest the Mariners have allowed all season
