THE LEAD – Maine Maritime Academy scored two goals over an 82 second span in the final minutes of regulation to come-from-behind and defeat host Lesley University, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's soccer action at Minuteman Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following an exciting first half, Lesley held a 3-2 lead at halftime and that's where things stood entering the 87th minute of play before chaos erupted for the hosts thanks to an offensive outburst by MMA.
- With 2:36 to play in regulation, the Mariners drew their second penalty kick off the day for a chance to even the score at 3-3 and Gabriel Toledo calmly converted the attempt for his second goal of the afternoon to lock the score at 3-3.
- Just 82 seconds later, a through-ball by Matthew Villeneuve set up John-John Dickenson for his second goal of the match to sink the hosts in a 4-3 final.
- Dickenson got the scoring started back in the 35th minute with an unassisted tally to put MMA on top, 1-0, but the Lynx answered almost immediately on Nasr Almohammadi's (Revere, Mass.) first collegiate goal coming off a direct free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box, tying the score at 1-1 in the 37th minute.
- The Mariners also responded quickly to regain the lead at 2-1, drawing their first penalty of the match which allowed Toledo to deposit his first goal of the day at the 37:38 timestamp.
- Marc Kenny Derac (Waltham, Mass.) tied things up at 2-2 with 2:57 left in the first half, taking a ball over the top from Aidan Stafford (Waltham, Mass.) and finishing for the equalizer.
- With 1:18 left in the first half, Adrian Esparragoza (New York, N.Y.) gave the hosts momentum heading in to the break with another free kick score, converting a direct kick from 26 yards out to give Lesley the 3-2 lead heading into the break, and setting the stage for the late game MMA fireworks.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Reagan Moynihan (3-3-3) made six saves to earn the win while junior Aiden Hendricks (Richmond, Va.) made three stops.
- The brace for Dickenson marked the fifth multi-goal outing of his collegiate career and second during his senior campaign.
- Similarly for Toledo, his brace was also the fifth multi-goal game of his career and second of the campaign for the junior.
- The three Lesley goals in the first half marked the first time since Sept. 9, 2023, that the program recorded three goals in the same period.
OF NOTE
- Despite the 1-3-3 conference mark, the Lynx still have an outside chance to qualify for the 2025 North Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament. The Lynx must secure a win in their final regular-season conference match-up and will need SUNY Cobleskill, VTSU Johnson and UMaine-Presque Isle all to lose in their final conference games next weekend. If this scenario plays out, Lesley secures the No. 6 seed in the tournament field.
UP NEXT
- Lesley returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 22 for a 4:00 PM afternoon affair on the road vs. Fitchburg State.
- MMA hosts Husson in Castine, Maine next Saturday, Oct. 25 with a 2:30 PM kickoff.
