CAMBRDIGE, MA – Katie Bennett (Bartlett, NH) followed in
the footsteps of teammates Sarah Wilson (Lowell, MA) and Lani
Cabral-Pini (Wilmington, MA) who have already been honored this
Spring by the North Atlantic Conference as Rookies of the Week.
Bennett’s accomplishment this year is the most impressive of
all because she missed all of preseason and the first eight games
of the year due to injuries. On March 20th of this year, Bennett
went into the game against Becker College and pitch hit for Katie
Wilson (Kittery, ME). Bennett popped up to the catcher recording
the last out of the inning. This was Bennett’s first
collegiate at bat. She also had just been given the green light by
the Lesley trainer to start swinging a bat that week.
Bennett’s pop-up to the catcher would be anything but an
indication of what she could do in a game.
The next day Bennett was the DP in the second game against Mount
Ida College. She gave a short preview of what she would continue to
do all year as she went 3-4 and scored twice.
Since the Mount Ida game Bennett has been the fulltime DP for
Lesley University and has stepped up in that role for the Lynx. In
just twelve games for the Lynx Bennett has twelve RBI’s.
Bennett is also second on the team in batting average, hitting
.412, and second on the team with a .500 slugging percentage.
Bennett has only been getting better as the year has progressed and
she had her best week of the year last week, when she was honored
as the NAC Rookie of the Week. During her award winning week
Bennett went 6-12 (.500), half of her hits were doubles, she drove
in nine RBI’s and she scored two runs.
Bennett and the Lynx are back in action on Wednesday, April 19th as
they travel to Bay Path College. For more information on Bennett or
