FT. MYERS, FL - Day four of spring training witnessed a Lynx offensive eruption followed by a Lynx offensive hibernation. The Lesley University softball team spilt its final double-header at the Gene Cusick Classic to finish the week 5-3, the best finish ever for the Lynx at the Classic.
The day started with the Lynx putting on an offensive exhibition
against Salem State College. Lesley erupted for 10 hits and
11 runs in a five inning blowout of Salem State.
Salem State would strike first as they were able to get a run in
the top of the first, but that lead would not last very long.
Lesley would explode out of the gate as they put up five runs in
the bottom of the fifth, thanks in part to a three-run homerun by
Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, MA).
Lesley would continue to pile it on in the second as they got three more runs thanks to a two-run homerun by Jodi Fralick (Woburn, MA) to increase their lead to 8-1. The Lynx were not done and would add two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend the lead to 10-1.
Salem State College would not go away so easily and would manage two runs in the top of the fifth to avoid getting the mercy rule enforced against them. However, that dream would not last long as Sarah Wilson (Lowell, MA) singled in Fralick to put the Lynx up eight runs in the fifth inning, thus ending the game.
Maureen Mikos (Fairfield, CT) improved her record to 3-1 on the year as she pitched a complete game four hitter for the Lynx. Mikos allowed two earned runs over the five innings while striking out three batters.
Saltzman led the Lynx offensively as she was 1-3 with a run scored and a game-high four RBI. Fralick and Wilson each added 3 RBI as Fralick was 2-2 with three runs scored and Wilson was 2-4 with a run scored.
Lesley continued to hit the ball well in their second game of the day, but they were unable to produce any runs. The Lynx fell to Wilmington College 1-0 even though they had eight team hits.
Christina Anzilotti (Pelham, NY) pitched well against Wilmington as she pitched six strong innings, but was let down by the Lesley defense. The Lynx committed five team errors, their most so far this season, and two of the errors led to the only run of the game. Back to back throwing errors in the bottom of the first advanced Dana LaCoste around the bases and was the reason for her scored run.
Saltzman put the finishing touches on an outstanding week at the plate as she was 2-3 against Wilmington. Fralick also chipped in with two hits as she was 2-4.
Lesley completed its week down in Ft. Myers, FL with a record of 5-3 overall and 5-0 in the Northeast Region (which is one of the criteria's used for at large bids into the NCAA tournament). Lesley's 5-3 record is the best start in Lesley softball history. The Lynx look to continue their great play as they host five home games on the weekend of March 30th.
Lesley hosts Wheelock College and division opponents Lasell College and Bay Path College. The doubleheader against Lasell is a rematch of last years NAC quarterfinal game in which Lesley defeated the Lasers 5-1 to advance to the NAC Championships.
