CHICOPEE, MA - Lesley University came from behind in the second game of the day to defeat Elms College for the first time in the school's history. The win is even more significant than that for the Lynx. The victory is the first regular season conference loss by Elms College since 2004 which was a streak of 34 games, and also serves as revenge for the 6-4 defeat that Elms handed Lesley in the semifinals of last year's NAC Tournament.
Game 1
The Lesley bats were unable to wake up and Elms College cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Lynx to improve their all-time record against Lesley to 11-0.
Elms struck immediately taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Lynx would not respond and seemed to be unable to figure out junior pitcher Tammie Tremblay (Springfield, MA). Elms would strike again in the third to go up 2-0, and then they put the game away in the sixth with three more runs to take a 5-0 lead. The Lynx would get one in the seventh as Christina DiGiorgio (Lowell, MA) was able to drive in Gianna Spaziante (Hawthorne, MA).
Maureen Mikos (Fairfield, CT) suffered the loss for the lynx and fell to 8-3 on the year. Mikos pitched the complete game while giving up five runs (four earned) while striking out two and walking one.
Game 2
Lesley completely turned it around in the nightcap of the doubleheader and shocked Elms College with a thrilling 5-4 victory.
Christina Anzilotti (Pelham, NY) pitched well for the Lynx but walked away with a no-decision. Mikos was credited with the win and improved to 9-3 on the year. Mikos pitched three innings while giving up one run and walked one batter.
The Lesley bats came alive in the second game as Spaziante led the charge against Elms. Spaziante went 2-4 to improve to an overall 3-7 over the two games. Courtnie Leakeas (Lowell, MA), Jodi Fralick (Woburn, MA), DiGiorgio and Katie Wilson (Kittery, ME) all went 2-4 to help the Lynx to 12 hits in the second game.
The Lynx jumped out to a 2-1 lead after one inning but Elms quickly came back and retook the lead 3-2 in the second. The Lesley bats were quite in the third but then they put together two runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Lani Cabral-Pini (Wilmington, MA) hit a sac fly to score DiGiorgio and Courtnie Leakeas singled to score Katie Wilson.
Elms College tied the game up at four in the top of the sixth. The Lynx went quietly in the bottom of the sixth and Mikos breezed through the top of the seventh, setting the stage for a dramatic ending.
Spaziante led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left. DiGiorgio singled, moving Spaziante to third. DiGiorgio then stole second, so with no outs Katie Wilson was up with runners on second and third. Wilson hit an infield single that was unable to score Spaziante. Alicia Pari (North Providence, RI) stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and no outs. Pari quickly fell behind in the count 0-2. However, using amazing plate discipline Pari battled back and drew a walk, driving in the game winning run.
With the win the Lynx improve to 15-6 overall (5-3 in the NAC). The Lynx are back in action on Thursday when they travel to UMass-Boston for a doubleheader. For more information on the Lesley softball team please go to their website.
