Lesley exits NCAA Tourney after 1-0 loss to Rivier

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Lesley University softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Regional Tournament at Rhode Island College after losing to Rivier College 1-0.

In a pitcher's duel between Lesley's Alicia Burnett (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) and Monica White (Augusta, Me.), both pitchers gave up just four hits each.  Burnett took the loss but gave up an unearned run while striking out three in six innings pitched.  White was dominant as the sophomore struck out 13 Lynx batters in the shutout performance.

Lesley's best opportunity to score came in the top of the fourth inning when Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, Mass.), who had hit a crucial two-run home run in Thursday's game, doubled to deep left centerfield to start the inning.  Saltzman would get to third on a sacrifice but would not score as Wellesley got out of the frame unscathed.

The only run scored came in the bottom of the fourth inning when White scored on a weak grounder to the second baseman by Jenna Beadle (Rumney, N.H.).  The Lynx would be able to get out of the rest of the inning to hold the score at 1-0.

The Lynx would get the tying run on second in the top of the seventh inning after a single and stolen base by Gianna Spaziante (Hawthorne, N.Y.), but the runner would not score.

Lesley finishes their memorable 2008 season with a 30-12 record after winning the North Atlantic Conference Championship and qualifying for the NCAA Regional Tournament.
