Late comeback falls short as Lynx drop pair

WELLESLEY, MA -- A four-run seventh-inning, Game 2 comeback came up short as Lesley fell to Wellesley, 8-7, after dropping the opener by the score of 6-2.

Junior Gabrielle Brixey homered, scored twice and drove in two on the day. Emily Mangiaratti and Jennifer Dorval each went 2-for-4 in the nightcap, with the leadoff hitter scoring twice and Dorval driving in three from the clean-up spot.

A day after throwing her first career no-hitter, Game 1 starter Cassandra Knox was rudely welcomed to Wellesley. A Sara Del Bazo two-run triple crowned a five-run second inning rally for the Blue, putting the Lynx in an insurmountable hole in the early going.

With Lesley trailing 6-0 in the sixth, Brixey's two-run blast to left-center field, her first homer as a Lynx, ruined Sarah Schwartzmeyer's shutout bid, but it was all the Lynx could muster in the team's 6-2 defeat.

Wellesley struck the first blow, hanging a third-inning five spot on the Lynx before another late Lesley rally again came up short in Game 2. A Del Bazo RBI single made it a 1-0 game in the second, and the small ball continued to the tune of five runs an inning later. Four RBI singles and an RBI walk again put the Lynx in a 6-0 hole after the third, but Lesley didn't go quietly.

Trailing 8-3 in the seventh, a four-run rally that saw the tying run reach base started with a Jenna Fralick walk and Nicole Mercurio pinch-hit single. Fralick and Maria Nazzaro, running for Mercurio, both scored, and a Dorval two-run single made it an 8-7 game. With Alyson Durben at the plate with Dorval on first, the centerfielder flew to center to end it.

Lesley's winning streak is snapped at seven, while Wellesley now assumes a seven-game winning streak at 18-8. The Lynx return to action tomorrow night at Emmanuel at 7 p.m.
