THE LEAD –  In what served as the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener for both squads, the Lesley University split Monday's doubleheader with UMPI taking the first game 6-2 and dropping the second, 7-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • UMPI got on the board first early on thanks to a two-run top of the first with RBIs from Grace Walsh and Sabrina Kauffman.
  • However, the Lynx would finally respond in the bottom half of the second and evened things at two thanks to RBIs from both Lauren Martin (Lexington, Mass.) and Jess O'Neill (Reading, Mass.). Martin got the scoring started after a soft grounder to second allowed Isabella Moscoso (El Cajon, Calif.) to score after reaching on a fielder's choice earlier. In the next at-bat, O'Neill drove in the tying run with a single that went past the Owls shorstop bringing home Leah St. John (New Ipswich, N.H.) who drew a walk earlier in the frame.
  • In the fourth, UMPI threatened to take the lead after loading the bases with two outs when Michaela Carney drew a walk. However, Lynx starter Madison Herbert (Milford, N.H.) escaped the jam by forcing a key ground out in the next at-bat which kept things tied at two.
  • Later in the fifth inning, Lesley broke the game wide-open thanks to a four-run frame that gave the squad a 6-2 lead. St. John highlighted the inning with the go-ahead home run that went deep to left field. Martin and Emma Hodgkins (Raymond, N.H.) also drove in runs for the Lynx during their high scoring inning. From then on, Herbert retired the next six batters to secure the 6-2 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • St. John's homer marked the first of her collegiate career.
  • Martin tied her season-high in RBIs Monday with two.
  • Herbert was stellar on the mound for the hosts as she tossed a complete game going 7.0 IP and allowed just three hits while striking out five.
  • For UMPI, both Walsh and Kauffman paced the offense with RBIs.
  • Owls starter Walsh, took the loss after tossing 6.0 IP allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned).
  • UMPI's three hits marked a new season-low allowed by Lesley pitching.
  • Monday's win marked the first NAC win of the season and the first confernece win in Head Coach Lou Proietti's Lesley career.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • Just like game one, the Owls got on the board in the top of the first and took an early 3-0 lead highlighted by a Walsh two-run homer to center.
  • After UMPI tacked on another run in the second to go up 4-0, Lesley finally was able to get on the board in the bottom half of the second thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kari Sorensen (Thousdan Oaks, Calif.)
  • Lesley had a solid chance in the bottom of the third after a Sydney McAvoy (Billerica, Mass.) drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Unfortunately UMPI starter Megan Bucholz ended the Lesley threat with a strikeout in the following at-bat.
  • In the fourth, the Owls pushed their lead out to five (6-1) with a two-run frame which included RBIs from Zoe Stewart and Walsh. The Lynx trimmed the deficit down to four after Mariah Febo (Boston, Mass.) ripped an RBI single up the middle which allowed Herbert to score after she drew a walk earlier. Later after a St. John single and UMPI error loaded the bases for the Lynx, the squad was looking to threaten once again. However, Bucholz escaped yet another jam with another ground out.
  • UMPI added on another run in the seventh to back up five (7-2) but in the bottom half of the inning, Lesley got one back courtesy of an RBI single to right from Martin that brought home St. John who singled past the left side earlier. Unfortunately, the Owls were able to retire the next batter and get the 7-3 win.
