Softball Drops Weekend Doubleheader at UMaine Farmington

THE LEAD – The Lesley University softball team kicked off a four-game road trip in Maine where the squad took on UMaine Farmington in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action but fell 11-8 in game one, and 10-2 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • Lesley's offense started off fast as the Lynx scored a combined four-runs between the second and third innings which included a three-run second. During the squad's high scoring inning, Jess O'Neill (Reading, Mass.) highlighted the scoring with a two-run RBI double that made it 2-0 at the time. 
  • However, in the bottom half of the third, UMaine Farmington trimmed its deficit to one (4-3) which included a two-run shot to right from Jessica Dow after Abby Wrinn recorded an RBI earlier in the inning.
  • Despite making it a one-run game, Lesley pulled back ahead by three (6-3) in the top of the fifth thanks to Isabella Moscoso (El Cajon, Calif.) and Shae Thomas (Clayton, N.C.) driving in runs. 
  • Unfortunately the Beavers would go back ahead by two (8-6) after the hosts recorded a five-run fifth inning. Maddie Pike highlighted the offense in the frame with a two-run RBI double that found a gap in center which made it 7-6 at the time. 
  • The Lynx would not go quietly however thanks to a two-run sixth that tied things back up at eight. After the Beavers recorded two quick outs, Sydney McAvoy (Billerica, Mass.) drew a walk and the very next at-bat saw Leah St. John (New Ipswich, N.H.) belt her second homer of the season over the fence in left center. 
  • Even with the late momentum, UMaine Farmington responded with a three-run bottom of the sixth after a go-ahead two-run shot off the bat of Wrinn which made it 10-8. Later in the inning, Pike would tack on another run with a RBI single to center making it 11-8 going into the final inning. From then on, Beavers pticher Mack Bergen would retire the Lynx in order for the 11-8 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • St. John's homer is not her second of the season, but also the second of her career.
  • Both St. John and O'Neill led the Lesley offense with two RBIs apeice. 
  • On the mound, Hodgkins was dealt with the loss after going 6.0 IP while allowoing 11 hits and 10 runs and striking out eight. 
  • For UMaine Farmington, Wrinn led the Beavers offense with four RBIs. Along with Wrinn, Pike and and Dow also had multiple RBIs with three and two respectively.
  • Mack Bergen grabbed the win for the Beavers after coming for relief by tossing 2.0 IP alloiwn gone hit and two runs while striking out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • The Lynx struck first in game two again after a two-run first which included RBIs from Thomas and St. John. However, the hosts responded in the bottom half of the frame with a four-run inning which included a two-run RBI single from Isabella LaFrance that made it 4-2. 
  • Lesley had a chance to answer in the top of the third when Thomas hit a single to right center but unfortunately UMaine Farmington starter Carleigh Schievink retired the next batter on a grounder which kept the game at 4-2. 
  • Later in the fourth, UMaine Farmington tacked on three more runs making it a 7-2 ballgame. Christa Allen highlighted the inning with a RBI double to third which made it 6-2. The Beavers offense would continue to increase their lead by scoring three total runs between the fifth and sixth that made it 10-2. In the Beavers two-run sixth, Olivia Paradis and Melissa Mayo each had RBIs for the hosts that ultimately secured the game two win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)

  • Martin and Thomas each paced the Lynx offense by recording an RBI.
  • On the mound, Madison Herbert (Milford, N.H.) was given the loss after going 5.0 IP and allowing 13 hits and eight runs while striking out one.
  • For the hosts, three different batters finished with two RBIs (Allen, LaFrance, and Paradis).
  • Schievink ended up with the win in a complete game effort while giving up six hits and two runs along with four strikeouts.
