THE LEAD – Despite a setback in their 2026 opener, the Lesley University Softball team had nothing but spirit Sunday morning to kick off the 2026 campaign in a 14-0 defeat at the hands of Westfield State University on the first day of the Lynx Spring Break trip earlier today at North Collier Regional Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following a scoreless first inning, the Owls opened the morning's action in the second, pushing three runs across on three hits. A sac fly by Katelyn Baker got Westfield State on the board before Reagan Salvatore's infield single resulted in two more runs to make it 3-0 early on.
- The squads traded scoreless frames in the third including a 1-2-3 inning behind a solid effort by LU senior pitcher Madison Herbert to keep it a three-run game.
- The Owls blew the game open in the fourth, sending 14 batters to the plate for nine runs on eight hits while taking advantage of three Lesley miscues to move the score to 12-0.
- Westfield scored two more runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Eva Surette to account for the 14-0 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Shayna Bakun earned the win in the circle going 3 and 1/3 innings, striking out five and surrendering just two hits to notch her first collegiate pitching win. Cassidy Wallner closed the game, recording the final five outs of hitless ball, surrendering just one walk to go along with three K's.
- Herbert (0-1) suffered the loss for Lesley, striking out one over four innings of work before junior Isabella Moscoso registered one K in her inning of action in the circle.
- The Lynx got hits from Moscoso and junior Shae Thomas while junior Lauren Martin drew a walk.
