THE LEAD – Lesley University used a pair of set piece corner kick goals to pick up an important 2-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's soccer victory on Sunday afternoon vs. Maine Maritime Academy at Minuteman Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • MMA had the first real scoring chance of the day when Hadley Stoddard slipped past the LU backline for a semi-breakaway on the left side only to be denied by Lesley senior keeper Madison Reed (Burlingame, Calif.).
  • Senior Kylie Chagnon (Framingham, Mass.) opened the scoring in the 20th minute with her fifth goal of the campaign to put the hosts up 1-0. Junior Bethany Slivka (Berkley, Mass.) played in a high cross on the corner that Chagnon ran through with a powerful header to put the Lynx on the board.
  • The Lynx outshot the Mariners 7-2 at the break with each squads only attempting one corner.
  • Early in the second stanza on another corner attempt, Slivka delivered another dangerous ball into the six-yard box that senior Rachel Weinzimer (Woodland Hills, Calif.) headed home for what would prove to be the eventual game-winner, putting the hosts on top 2-0 with just over 33 minutes to play.
  • Maine Maritime answered shortly after with a long through-ball by Charlotte Manes to Stoddard who, this time, beat Reed to cut the deficit in half and move the score to 2-1.
  • The Mariners pressed and over the final 10 minutes got off three looks but Lesley was able to hang on for the 2-1 league win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Reed earned the win in net making four saves to improve to 4-2-6 on the year.
  • Slivka now has seven assists on the year to lead Lesley while ranking tied for second in the NAC.
  • Stoddard's marker was her conference-leadings 16th tally of the 2025 campaign.
  • Isa Thesing turned away six shots between the pipes for MMA to fall to 10-6 on the year in net.

OF NOTE

  • For the time being, the win moves Lesley into sole possession of first place in the NAC with one game to play, ahead of Husson University by one point. The Eagles still have two games remaining on their schedules while the Lynx have one. If the Lynx win their final NAC game and Husson loses either of their remaining two contests, LU would secure the top seed in the 2025 NAC Women's Soccer Tournament.

UP NEXT

  • Lesley is off all week and returns to competition next Saturday, Oct. 25 for its regular-season finale on the road vs. VTSU Lyndon at 1:00 PM.
  • MMA hosts Husson in Castine, Maine the same day with a 12:00 PM kickoff.
