THE LEAD — The Delhi Broncos Women's Volleyball team had a dominant showing to open up NAC conference play, defeating Lesley University in straight sets, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-16), Friday evening at the Floyd L Maines Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Midway through the opening set, the hosts rattled off seven straight points to put away the Lynx in a 25-11 score hitting .346 as a team.
- The Lynx couldn't slow down the Broncos to start set 2, allowing a 9-0 flurry to open the frame. Lesley regrouped with a 6-1 spurt late in the set that included kills from sophomore Alawnah Dunda (Fort Anne, N.Y.) and junior Rayann Fatahi (Arlington, Mass.) but Delhi held on for the 25-12 win.
- Lesley played some of its best ball of the evening in the third frame, opening things with a 7-4 surge to take a three-point lead that forced SUNY to burn a timeout. A kill by sophomore Korinne Hall-Johnson (North Brunswick, N.J.) made it 10-8 in favor of the Lynx for the hosts rallied with a 12-1 blast to pull away at 20-11. LU played things evenly to the end as junior Shae Thomas (Clayton, N.C.) picked up two kills and an ace down the stretch but it wasn't enough as the Broncos coasted in a 25-16 final for the sweep.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Delhi junior Kayla Nuss once again led the way for the Broncos, leading the team in digs (13) and kills (16) while managing a .682 hitting percentage.
- SUNY senior Audrey Logsdon added 12 kills of her own to go along with eight service aces, and first year Skyler Furtado added five kills and seven digs of her own.
- Thomas registered six kills and six digs for the Lynx in the loss. Hall-Johnson added a team-high 12 digs while Mariah Febo (Boston, Mass.) chipped in with nine assists.
