THE LEAD — The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team ran its winning streak to four games as the Falcons swept Lesley College, 3-0 on Wednesday evening in a non-conference game in The Nest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Albertus conceded the first three points to Lesley in the first set, and wouldn't take its first lead in the set until they made it 12-11 after scoring five straight points that included two kills by Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colobia) and two aces from Sophie Cseszko (Grapevine, TX). Lesley regained the lead and increased it to 20-17, but the Falcons once again scored five straight points, which included two more kills from Pelaez. The Falcons closed out a set with an ace from Gordon to give Albertus the 1-0 lead in the match.
- The Falcons took a slim 7-5 lead in the second set and opened it up to a 20-7 lead. Gordon had an ace during the pivotal run and Pelaez added three more kills, while Emma Fallon (Harwinton, Conn.), Matheus and Nyanna Richards (Bridgeport, Conn.) each had one kill apiece. Fallon added two more kills in the set as Albertus took a 2-0 lead in the match.
- Matheus had three aces early in the third set as the Falcons took an 8-1 lead and never looked back. Albertus increased its lead to 16-4 as Cseszko added two kills while Camila Queiroz (West Haven, Conn.) had two aces. Lesley cut the Albertus lead to 16-8, but a kill from Ayanna Hubbard (West Haven, Conn.) and two aces from Naomi Batalla (New Haven, Conn.) put the Falcons back up 21-8. Queiroz, Natalie Garcia (New Haven, Conn.) and Matheus each added a kill over the final four Albertus points to finish off the sweep.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Korinne Hall-Johnson (North Brunswick, N.J.) paced Lesley with 10 digs.
- Mariah Febo (Boston, Mass.) added seven assists and two aces for the Lynx.
- Batalla had a career-high 11 assists.
- The Falcons had 14 aces, which was the sixth straight game with double-digit aces.
- Three of the four matches during AMC's four-game winning streak have been sweeps.
