THE LEAD — Despite a record-setting performance by Lesley University sophomore libero Korinne Hall-Johnson (North Brunswick, N.J.), the Lynx dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to VTSU Lyndon on Friday evening in North Atlantic Conference women's volleyball action. Hall-Johnson posted an incredible 48 digs to set a new LU single-match record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hornets took advantage of a slow start by the hosts, building an early cushion and using it to hold on for a 25-22 win in the opening frame, 25-22.
- Lesley regrouped and flipped the score in the second stanza for a 25-22 win. The Lynx trailed by as many as five early on (11-6) but tied the score at 13-all on an ace by Rayann Fatahi (Arlington, Mass.). The sides traded several points before a mini-flurry lifted VTSU ahead 19-16 late in the action before the hosts put together a 6-1 blitz to catapult ahead, 22-20, and hold on for the win with kills down the stretch from senior Estephany Morales (New York, N.Y.) and junior Shae Thomas (Clayton, N.C.).
- Lesley trailed early in the third going behind 2-1 but after taking a 4-3 lead, did not trail again in the frame to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- The Lynx looked poised for their first win of the campaign, leading 22-21 late in the fourth set following a Thomas kill before the Hornets rattled off the next four points to force a decisive fifth frame.
- Sophomore Alawnah Dunda (Fort Anne, N.Y.) opened the set with a kill to give the hosts a brief lead before four straight VTSU points crushed the vibe. Lesley was unable to recover as the Hornets played the set out to a 15-8 win to take the match, 3-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Hall-Johnson's feat breaks the single-match digs record previously held by Hana Sakamoto who recorded a 39 dig outing back on Oct. 26, 2006 vs. Saint Joseph's College (CT). In addition to the record, she added a match-high six aces to go along with three assists.
- Thomas posted a double-double with 18 digs and 12 kills, both career-highs in only four sets of action.
- Sophomore Abbie Price (Waco, Tex.) chipped in with a career-best 12 kills after missing over a week of action in her return to the lineup
- Fatahi also enjoyed some career-highs with 10 digs and eight kills
- Junior Mariah Febo (Boston, Mass.) contributed a career-high 38 assists in the setback.
- All six played in the VTSU lineup finished with double-digit dig totals, paced by a team-high 23 digs from Sydney Clunis.
- Kiara Mack led all players with 17 kills to go along with 12 digs for a double-double while Nei'Shae Clegg finished with 19 digs and 11 kills for the Hornets.
- Lesley picked up two sets for the first time in a match since Oct. 15, 2019 when they posted a pair of 3-0 wins over Pine Manor College.
