THE LEAD — The Mitchell College women's volleyball team posted a 3-0 non-conference victory over Lesley University on Wednesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Mariners opened the match strong with 11 straight points before LU senior Estephany Morales (New York, N.Y.) got the Lynx on the board with a kill but the damage was done and the hosts cruised to a 25-8 first set win.
  • Morales recorded an early kill in set 2 even the score at 1-1 but again Mitchell put together a strong surge scoring eight consecutive points to take control of the action again en route to a 25-10 win.
  • A kill by sophomore Alawnah Dunda (Fort Anne, N.Y.) followed by an MC attacking error gave Lesley its first lead of the action early in set 3 but the hosts regrouped to post a 25-17 victory for the sweep.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Mariners' balanced offensive attack was led by sophomore Genna Hyde (Cypress, Texas), who racked up 28 points, including 16 kills and 12 service points.
  • MC senior Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) anchored the defensive effort with a team-high nine digs, while junior setter Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) set the table with a match-high 11 assists.
  • The Mariners combined for 22 digs and held Lesley to a .021 hitting percentage.
  • Dunda added four kills to pace the Lynx attack while Korinne Hall-Johnson (No. Brunswick, N.J.) posted a match-high 11 digs.

UP NEXT

  • Lesley is back on the road on Friday, Oct. 3 at SUNY Delhi for a 7:00 PM NAC showdown.
  • The Mariners (7-6, 1-4 GNAC) return to the court on Tuesday, October 7, for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup at Albertus Magnus College.
